It has tons and tons of units, most of which are high fantasy, but it started out by adding a lot more historically-inspired human units, so you have all kinds of knightly orders, landsknechts, different types of musketeers, etc, etc. Or you could try the Chivalrous Intentions mod It is still fantasy, and there's a giant undead invasion, and Dany starts with a bunch of dragons, but all the factions are human and it is much more low fantasy.īe aware that it affects the base game, so only install the mod if you want to play this map, and uninstall it afterwards. You could try the Game of Thrones/Westeros map. It is because there are so MANY special abilities that you always need to be on your toes, always try to think of counters, always have extra tools at your disposal to fight with.
Base units in Age of Wonders are fine, but battles using only basic swordsmen, archers and cavalry would get boring fairly fast. No teleporting unicorns or freezing elementals or regenerating trolls to fight.Įven if you don't like the fantasy abilities, they provide complexity. In a historical setting, you couldn't have any of the fun special abilities. Much of the fun and the tactical complexity in Age of Wonders comes from the many, many different types of creatures and monsters you fight, the many types of abilities you have, etc. I'm not sure it would be a good idea for this game. It would be a huge effort and I'm not sure anyone would try. There is no historical mod for this game. (Vanguard troopers only need a blaster and a white paint job to look like storm troopers, the Psynumbra Malictors just need a laser sword to be Sith.) If you want a science-fiction setting, check out the sequel "Planetfall." If someone ever were to make a star-wars mod, that would be the place to do it I think.
